Beverly Goebel, a midfielder during the 2011 WPS season for the Western New York Flash is not only a WPS Champion she is currently in Vantaa, Finland playing for PK-35. Goebel was WNY Flash’s second round pick during the 2011 draft. We got a chance to catch up with her recently to discuss the WPS season, becoming a WPS Champion, Finland and of course we wanted you to get to know her with a few fun facts. Take a look below.

Pitchside Report Announcement: Goebel has joined the Pitchside Report team as a guest blogger and you will see updates from her weekly. She will start her blog next week. Make sure you come back to check it out!

Nell: Describe what this past WPS season has been like for you and what it means now to be a WPS Champion.

Bev Goebel: The past WPS season has been amazing. I have never felt so close to a team before. We weren’t only teammates we were friends, best friends. I truly feel interaction amongst the players on and off the field is huge. It is hard to get 24 players all on the same page, but it came so naturally to the team. I knew we were capable of doing and being something great this season the moment I met the team and came in for pre season.

Now to be a WPS champion, looking back a few years ago I never thought I would be saying those words in the same sentence. I remember in High School when WUSA folded thinking to mysef, I hope it comes back so that I could have an opportunity to play in the league. Now, approximately 8 years later I am a WPS Champion, who would have guessed. Hopefully the circle of soccer life continues and those girls out there hoping to play professionally some day will have the same opportunity as me. To be a “WPS Champion.”

Nell: What was the hardest part of the season for you?

Bev Goebel: The hardest part of the season was accepting my role on the team which was coming in off the bench and doing my best to make an impact. Like every athlete in the world we always want to play and feel like we are contributing to the team. But again it came back to the fact each of the Flash players were my friends/teammates and considered family to me. If they needed me to come off the bench, I would do so with a proud smile on my face and work as hard as I possibly could for those short amount of minutes. I realized something this season and frankly I will never forget it. It is not about how many minutes you play that justifies you as a person or a player its about your character and how you present yourself that really defines who you are and how successful you will be in life. I had a choice this season and it was to sit and pout about my playing time, or take the minutes I was getting and run with them. To show my team I was capable of making and impact and I would do my best to provide what the team needed at the time.

Nell: What do you think your biggest contribution was?

Bev Goebel: I tried everyday to make a contribution to the team. On and off the field, from coaching out in the community to trying to improve daily at practice. I would say my biggest contribution was being positive.

Nell: Describe your style of play?

Bev Goebel: I like to play simple soccer as you would call it. I enjoy possessing the ball and participating in a game when I know the crowd is enjoying watching it. To me that is “Barcelona style possession.”

Nell: What is your top goal for the offseason?

Bev Goebel: My top goal for the off season is to work on my long ball. I am better with the short passing game, but if I can continue to work on perfecting my long ball to switch the point of attack quickly I truly believe that will help make me a more well rounded player. Another goal is to get some games in, since I did not play in many 90 minute games I would like to strengthen my game fitness and focus on my game decisions.

Nell: Why did you decide to go to Finland and how are things going there so far?

Bev Goebel: I decided at the very last minute to go to Finland. I was initially looking to go overseas to continue playing during the off season, so that I would come into the 2012 season as prepared as possible. I began looking into the leagues in Australia, but it did not end up working out as planned. This opportunity to play in Finland came up towards the end of my search to play overseas and I took the opportunity in a heart beat. A chance to play in a foreign country with great players and explore a new city, why not? I am enjoying myself here very much. The people are so nice and to my surprise they speak a great deal of English. They watch popluar American television shows and even listen to American music. It actually feels very normal coming here. The team is great and so welcoming I am looking forward to my six weeks here in Vantaa, Finland.

Nell: What are you missing most about the States?

Bev Goebel: Definitely my family and friends. It is hard going away on your own, but I have been doing it for a while now. I miss watching my nieces and nephews grow up the most. When they are so little they grow way too fast. As for the food in Finland, it is awesome, I am loving the dairy and bread products. Honestly there is nothing comparable in the States to these products, but I am missing the sugar. Yes, I do eat healthy, as a professional athlete. It is important, but when I have a sweet tooth I would like more options. Haha! It is all about Sour Patch Watermelon candies. Here they love black licorice : ( Yuk!

Nell: Favorite – Food? Book? Song?

Bev Goebel: My favorite food is definitely Mexican food. Favorite book: Athletes Bible FCA. Song: Well right now it is Lil Wayne “How to Love.” It honestly changes all the time. But my favorite song of all time is I Wanna Love Ya by the one and only Bob Marley!

Nell: Is it true you were homecoming queen in high school?

Bev Goebel: Haha I am so shocked this is a one of the questions, and how the heck did you all know this? Well yes it is true. It was a really exciting moment in my high school days. In fact I won homecoming 3 of my 4 years of high school. I enjoyed high school very much.
